My cheap coffee maker from a yard sale finally gave up the ghost after 2 years

It started leaking all over my counter yesterday morning, so I had to use instant coffee for the first time in ages, which got me thinking about how long you can really expect a budget appliance to last before it's worth just buying new.

My old thrift store toaster oven lasted 4 years before the door fell off. The real cost is the time spent cleaning up the messes and hunting for a new one. I've started checking the build date on any used appliance now, because a 5 year old cheap one is already on borrowed time.

Honestly, I've had the opposite luck. My main drip machine is a basic model I got for fifteen bucks at a garage sale maybe five years ago. It just needs a good vinegar clean every few months to keep it running. I figure if a used one lasts a year, it's already paid for itself.

The vinegar trick really does make cheap machines last forever.
