Shoutout to the 99 cent store for my kitchen knives lasting longer than my fancy set

I bought a single 99 cent paring knife back in 2021 just for opening boxes and it still cuts better than the $60 Wusthof set I got for Christmas that went dull after 6 months, anyone else have a random cheap winner that refuses to die?

Honestly, I gotta push back on this a little. A 99 cent knife lasting two years just for opening boxes is cool and all, but comparing it to a Wusthof set that went dull in six months sounds like you’re just not taking care of the nice knives. You gotta sharpen them, use the right cutting board, not throw them in the dishwasher. My fancy knives hold an edge way longer than any cheap thing I’ve had, but you also can’t treat them like a beater blade.

Oh come on, @james_kim, I gotta hard disagree here. That whole "treat them right" thing is part of the problem - fancy knives come with a whole list of rules and chores. Sharpen them, hand wash them, store them in a block, don't cut on glass. That's like having a high-maintenance pet instead of a tool. Meanwhile my $0.99 special lives in a junk drawer, gets thrown in the sink with dishes, and still opens boxes like a champ for two years. If I had to baby my knife just to keep it from getting dull (and spend money on sharpening rods), the cheap one is the smarter buy for someone like me who just wants to open their Amazon packages.
