Showerthought: Is buying 'budget' kitchen knives actually a trap?

I been buying cheap knives from the restaurant supply store for years, like $8 a pop. They work fine for a few months then go dull super fast. But I grabbed a mid range Victorinox 3 months ago for $35 and it's still sharp as hell. My question is has anyone else spent a bit more upfront and actually saved cash long term, or am I just getting lucky with this one?

Buying cheap just means buying twice, applies to tools, clothes, everything.
