That lady at the thrift store in Phoenix taught me how to spot real silver
I was digging through the jewelry bin at a Goodwill in Phoenix last Saturday when this older woman next to me pointed at a fork I was holding. She said, That's sterling, look for the 925 stamp near the handle. She showed me three more pieces with the same mark and explained that silver plate usually has EP or a different number. Has anyone else gotten good tips from random strangers at resale shops?

That's such a great story and I totally get why you'd remember her so clearly. I had a similar thing happen at a flea market in Tucson where this guy showed me how to test for real jade by touching it to my cheek, he said real jade stays cool for a second. It's amazing how strangers can just drop knowledge on you like that and it sticks with you forever. I still check every piece of jewelry I pick up for hallmarks because of that one person. Those little moments are the best part of thrift shopping honestly.

Drove two hours once just because a guy told me about a shop with vintage cameras in the back.
