Tried the 'free coffee grounds for garden fertilizer' tip from a budget blog. My entire backyard now smells like a Starbucks dumpster.

Did you mix them into the soil or just spread them on top?

My buddy just dumped a whole bag on his flower bed last month. I mean he just spread it like a blanket, didn't mix it at all. It crusted over into this nasty, moldy mat that smelled like a sewer. His plants looked worse, not better. He had to go out there with a shovel and dig the whole mess into the dirt to try and fix it. Total pain.

The budget blog didn't mention you need about a five gallon bucket of used grounds, not a whole trash bag. That concentrated smell is basically wet coffee rotting in the sun. You have to mix a thin layer deep into the soil, not just dump it on the lawn like mulch.
