Debate: Did paying for Priority Boarding actually backfire on me in Atlanta?

I spent $40 for Priority Boarding on a Delta flight out of Atlanta last month. I figured I'd get on early, grab overhead bin space, and relax. But then I sat there for an extra 20 minutes while everyone else boarded, and that time could have been spent at a gate bar or walking around Terminal A. Has anyone else found Priority Boarding to be a waste, or does it always save you from gate-checking your bag?

Hostel vs. couchsurfing in Barcelona last month, hostel won by a mile

I had to choose between a $30 a night hostel in the Gothic Quarter or crashing with a stranger through Couchsurfing. Went with the hostel because I wanted my own locker and a guaranteed shower without awkward small talk. Best call ever, the place had free walking tours and a rooftop bar where I met three other solo travelers. Has anyone else tried Couchsurfing and regretted it?

Why I stopped booking hotels through third party sites after a mess in Nashville

Last spring I booked a room in Nashville for 50 bucks a night through one of those discount sites. Got there at 11pm after a 12 hour drive and they had no record of my reservation whatsoever. Called the booking company and they put me on hold for 45 minutes before hanging up on me. Ended up paying double at a Super 8 down the road because everything else was sold out. Now I only book direct with the hotel even if it costs a little more up front. Has anyone else gotten burned by those third party sites or did I just pick the wrong one?

My buddy's Airbnb receipt made me rethink everything

He showed me his bill for a 4 night stay in Nashville. $87 a night for the room. Then $42 in 'cleaning fees' and $28 in 'service fees'. Ended up being $157 a night all said and done. I run my own cleaning biz so I know what a turnover costs. Those fees are pure profit for the platform. Has anyone else noticed the fees are getting way bigger than the room rate? I'm starting to look at motels again.

Last month I had a super early flight out of Lisbon at 6am and couldn't decide if I should drop $30 on a hostel dorm bed or just crash at the airport. I went with the airport option because I figured I'd only get a few hours of sleep anyway and $30 is a whole day's food budget. Turns out the sleeping area near gate 12 has these weird padded benches that are actually decent if you have a neck pillow. I got maybe 3 hours of sleep but woke up groggy and a little stiff. Finally tried hostel dorms in Prague instead of a private room on a 2 week trip

I always booked private rooms in hostels because I figured the sleep would be better alone. On a trip to Prague last March, the only beds left were in a 6 person dorm for $12 a night. I figured I'd deal with snoring and early risers. Honestly the first night was rough with someone coming in at 2 AM. But by day three I had made friends with three other solo travelers and we ended up splitting a car rental to Cesky Krumlov. Saved me about $80 on the transport alone. Plus one guy knew a hole in the wall spot for trdelnik that was half the tourist price. The whole trip cost me around $450 for two weeks including food. Has anyone else found that dorm rooms actually save you money beyond just the bed price?

Remember when we used to print out directions from MapQuest before a road trip

I was driving through Utah last month and my phone died right outside of Moab. No backup charger, no paper map. Had to pull over and wait 20 minutes for it to reboot. Made me think about how I used to always print out those MapQuest directions with the little step by step list and keep a paper atlas under the seat. Now I just assume my phone will work everywhere. It usually does but when it doesn't, man you feel dumb. Anyone else keep any old school backup stuff in their car just in case?
