Airbnb vs. hostel debate after a nightmare in Barcelona last August

I booked a cheap Airbnb in Barcelona and got locked out for 3 hours while the host ghosted me, but my friend stayed at a hostel nearby for half the price and had a blast. So is it worth rolling the dice on a private room or should we all just stick with hostels for real budget travel?

My friend tried that in Tokyo once but security kicked him out after like 20 minutes. @the_cole, your buddy must've had better luck picking a spot nobody noticed!
