Got burned paying $45 for a hostel 'breakfast' that was just stale bread and instant coffee
I'd been grabbing those add-on breakfast deals for months until a local at a cafe in Prague told me I could get fresh pastries and real coffee for like $3 a block away. Anyone else find out the hard way that hostel upsells are rarely worth it?

I paid $12 for a "free walking tour" breakfast in Budapest and thought I was saving money, but the yogurt was warm and there was maybe two bites of granola in a tiny cup. The hostel breakfast in Prague at $8 got me a hardboiled egg, a croissant, and coffee that didn't taste like burnt water, plus I could grab it at 5am before my train. Street food is great but not when you're rushing out the door at dawn with a backpack and no idea where a decent bakery is. The convenience of having something right downstairs, even if it's mediocre, can be worth the premium when you're exhausted from a late night exploring. Plus most hostels let you grab extra bread or fruit for later, so you're basically paying for a snack stash too. For $3 extra over that cafe price, I get zero navigation and zero stress.

Wait, you actually changed my mind on hostel breakfasts being worth it?
