Had a hostel owner in Medellin tell me something that killed my whole budget strategy
I was chatting with this guy who runs a 12 bed dorm in El Poblado. He said most travelers waste money on transport because they stay in one spot and Uber everywhere instead of just walking. It hit different because I had just dropped $40 on cabs in two days going to places that were 10 blocks apart. Has anyone else caught themselves overspending on moving around instead of the actual trip stuff?

Read somewhere that the average tourist in Medellin spends more on Ubers per day than on food. Switched to walking on my third day there and found a great arepa spot I wouldve never seen from a taxi window. The hills are rough but the city is actually pretty walkable if you plan your route right. Doesn't help that the hostels all push these party hostels in El Poblado that make you think you need to cab everywhere at night.

Puts it perfectly with how we get stuck in bubbles without even realizing it. Same thing happens here in my neighborhood with the grocery stores - the big chain is two blocks away but the little bodega around the corner has way better stuff, just nobody thinks to walk past it. Gets me thinking how many good spots we miss just because we default to the easy move.

The key is finding those little stair shortcuts they have everywhere (locals call them escalera), they cut through whole blocks and save your legs from the worst hills. Also, carrying small change for the bus is a lifesaver when you realize you miscalculated how long that uphill walk actually takes.
