Hostel dorm vs private room, my $240 mistake in Prague

I booked a private room in a Prague hostel for 3 nights because I thought I needed quiet after a long flight. That cost me $87 a night, while the dorm bed was only $38. Turned out the private room was right next to the lobby bar, so I heard every single conversation until 2am anyway. The next 2 nights I moved to the dorm and slept better with earplugs and an eye mask. If the noise is going to find you either way, you might as well save the cash for a good dinner. Has anyone else overpaid for a 'nicer' option that ended up being just as bad as the cheap one?
