Hostel vs. Airbnb debate: my phone got stolen in Barcelona last month
Stayed at a hostel in Barcelona last month, put my phone on the nightstand while I slept, and woke up to find it gone. The guy in the bunk above me checked out at 4 AM. Hostel staff said they couldn't do anything. So now I'm thinking, would an Airbnb have been safer? I saved maybe $30 a night at the hostel, but replacing my phone cost $250. What's your take on security vs. price when you're traveling cheap?

Yeah I stayed at a hostel in Lisbon once and some guy tried to take my charger while I was right there. Like dude I'm literally using it. People get weird with shared spaces. Airbnb might not stop a determined thief either though.

3 euros for a locker at the hostel could have saved your phone, but most people skip them. Just keep your valuables in a money belt under your pillow at night instead of leaving them out. Airbnb might feel safer but shared hostel rooms make it way too easy for random strangers to grab your stuff while you sleep.
