I finally tried the 'local bus to the next town' trick in Portugal

Last week in Lagos, I wanted to see the cliffs at Sagres but the tourist shuttle was 25 euros. A guy at the hostel told me to take the regular city bus to the main station, then the regional bus. Total cost was 4.80 euros round trip. The ride was maybe 15 minutes longer but the views were amazing and I got to see a real town on the way. Has anyone else found a good local bus route that saved a bunch of cash?

That "real town on the way" part is what got me, I used to just book tours.

Remember when tours felt like the only safe choice? I was the same way, always booking the bus trip. But finding those little towns you just drive through, the ones with the single bakery or the weird local market, that's the whole trip for me now. It turns a travel day into the best part. You can't buy that on a tour schedule.
