I used to think travel insurance was a waste of money for cheap trips
I found a study from a travel site that said the average cost to get a tourist home from a foreign hospital is over $10,000. I read this after my friend got food poisoning in Mexico City and her hospital bill was $2,800. She paid $45 for basic travel insurance and they covered all of it. I always skipped it on budget flights, thinking I'd just be careful. Now I see it as a non-negotiable part of my trip cost, even for a weekend away. What's the cheapest but still decent travel insurance you've actually used?

Yeah, that's a scary wake-up call for sure.

What kind of wake-up call are you talking about?

Scary is a strong word. I see stuff get called a wake-up call all the time online, and then nothing really changes. Like remember when everyone said that big data leak was a wake-up call for privacy? Most people just clicked "agree" on the next terms of service. It feels like we get a lot of alarms but hit snooze.
