Just saved $40 booking a hostel directly instead of using Hostelworld

I noticed Hostelworld adds booking fees that can be $5-$10 per night, plus some hostels give discounts for direct bookings. Last week I called a hostel in Lisbon before clicking pay, and they gave me a $12 per night rate versus the $20 listed online. Has anyone else tried calling ahead to compare prices?

Yeah, "notorious" is the word. They know they can cram people in like sardines and get away with it because everyone's just passing through.
