Overheard a guy at the Denver airport bragging about his $5 flight

I was waiting for my flight in Denver last month and this guy was telling his friend he booked a flight to Vegas for $5. Turns out he used some credit card sign-up bonus plus a mistake fare he found on a random Tuesday at 2am. Ngl, I took a screenshot of the airline he mentioned and I'm setting an alarm for 2am next week. Has anyone else stumbled on those crazy mistake fares or is this dude just lucky?

That "random Tuesday at 2am" part really sticks with me because my buddy Dave actually pulled something similar last year. He was just messing around on his laptop late one night and found a round trip from Chicago to Reykjavik for like 60 bucks total, no joke. The catch was the layover in some tiny airport in Canada was like 14 hours but he said it was totally worth it. I tried to replicate his luck for months and never got close, I think those mistake fares just kind of appear and disappear before normal people like us even see them.

Set up alerts on Google Flights, that's how I caught mine.
