Shoutout to the guy who swore by cooking hostel meals at 5pm to save cash

He told me hostel kitchens get slammed at 7pm so you wait forever for a burner, and he was right - I tried it twice in Lisbon and had the whole stove to myself both nights. Has anyone else used weird timing tricks like this to cut food costs?

my buddy jake tried a similar thing in Barcelona. he'd hit up a grocery store around 4pm and grab a pack of pasta and some cheap sauce, then cook at like 5:30 when nobody was in the kitchen. one time he even found a full bag of leftover bread from breakfast that the hostel was gonna toss, so he made garlic bread to go with it. saved like 8 euros that night compared to eating out. said the key was being real quiet so the staff didn't notice him using the kitchen outside the posted hours.
