Spent $60 on a portable clothesline for hostel drying racks and it paid for itself in 3 trips
Everyone says you can just use the hostel dryers or drape stuff over bunks but after getting my jeans stolen off a shared line in Barcelona I shelled out for a retractable one that fits in my pack and now I can dry my stuff anywhere without trusting strangers, anyone else find a random piece of gear that ended up being a lifesaver?

Honestly the 'draping stuff over bunks' part kills me. My friend did that in a hostel in Prague and came back to find someone had used her damp towel to wipe mud off their boots.

Wait, someone actually used a stranger's damp towel to clean muddy boots? That's a whole new level of hostel chaos I never signed up for, @abby_black I'm just glad my retractable line can hold my jeans without them becoming someone else's floor mat.

The drying line idea is brilliant, and I can totally see how that would save your stuff and your sanity. @abby_black's story about the muddy towel is exactly why I stopped trusting hostel bathmats too. There's something about shared drying spaces that brings out the worst in people, I swear.
