That $2 hostel towel in Bangkok saved me from a mess

I was super skeptical about those cheap hostel towel rentals in Asia, figured they'd be scratchy and gross. But after my luggage got delayed in Bangkok for 3 days last summer, I had to grab one at Lub d Hostel for 60 baht. Thing was actually soft and clean, and I ended up using it as a beach blanket too. Anyone else had a budget thing turn out way better than expected?

Did you check if the towel had that weird chemical smell after it got wet? I always give them a sniff test first. But yeah, those cheap hostel rentals can be a lifesaver. I had a similar thing happen in Chiang Mai last year, grabbed a 50 baht towel from a hostel and it was honestly softer than my one at home. Pro tip if you ever need to use it as a beach blanket again, shake it out good before you fold it up. Sand gets trapped in the fibers way worse than you'd expect.

Yo I actually read somewhere that the chemical smell thing is from cheap fabric softeners they use in hostels. Something about how it reacts with moisture and heat. Makes sense why it gets worse when wet. But seriously, sniff test is a must. I tried that once in Vietnam and the towel smelled like wet dog and bleach mixed together. Gross. Learned my lesson. The sand thing though. Man that's real. I used a hostel towel as a beach blanket in Bali and I'm still finding sand in my backpack months later. No joke. Feels like it never fully leaves. Better to just buy a cheap sarong instead.

Tbh @phoenix331 I'm convinced that sand is just part of my DNA now, not my backpack.
