The $19 hostel in Lisbon that changed how I book accommodations

I used to think hostels were all the same until I stayed at one near Alfama last summer. This place had actual curtains on the bunks and a free walking tour that saved me 40 euros. The difference was the owner spent his own money on real locks and outlets instead of fancy lobby decor. Why do so many budget spots think frills matter more than a decent night's sleep?

Wait, didn't @kelly.nora just nail it with the prison bunk comparison? My buddy Tom stayed at a "hip" hostel in Barcelona last year, place had a rooftop bar and a pool table no one used, but the beds were stacked so tight he could hear the guy above him breathing. He ended up moving to some random dorm off the main strip, and that one had actual reading lights and a plug right by the pillow, no frills. It's funny how a little curtain can beat all the fancy decor in the world, right?

Wait, you mean hostels aren't supposed to feel like a prison bunk with a free croissant? I've spent way too many nights waking up with a stranger's foot in my face just because they couldn't spring for a stupid curtain.

Nah, that's part of the whole experience though.
