TIL a 3 day rail pass in Japan costs less than one night in a Tokyo hotel

I was planning a 2 week trip for next spring and found out on the JR Pass site that a 3 day Kansai pass runs about $50, which is less than my hostel bed in Osaka, so I built the whole route around it, has anyone else done the math and picked the pass over point to point tickets?
