TIL hostel corkboards are obsolete for cheap eats now.

I used to hunt for handwritten notes on hostel boards to find budget meals. Now, a quick phone app search does the trick. It saved me a bunch of money on my last trip to Lisbon. I kinda miss the surprise of those old tips. But getting deals fast is a solid win.

Yeah that line about missing the surprise really hit me. I was a total corkboard romantic for years, thinking those scribbled notes were secret local knowledge. Then I followed one in Berlin that led me to the most overpriced, tourist trap döner place ever. Now I get that the apps showing real time prices and actual user photos just work better, even if it loses some charm. The trade off is worth it for not wasting cash.

Your Berlin döner story is exactly it. I totally bought into the idea that those handwritten notes were hidden gems you had to hunt for. Seeing that it just led to a bad tourist spot really shows how the apps, with all the reviews and pics, just cut through the guesswork. I don't love that the mystery is gone, but I love not wasting a meal on bad info.

Lisbon hostel boards still had a few good tips last spring.
