TIL that hostel receptionist in Lisbon taught me two totally different budget tricks
I was checking into a hostel in Lisbon last summer, and the guy at the desk showed me two ways to save on food. He said to either buy bread and cheese from the market for picnics, or hit the local tascas for a 5 euro lunch plate. One side is more work but way cheaper, the other is more social but costs a bit more. Which do you think works better for a solo traveler trying to meet people?

Oh wow, it's not like you're planning a whole trip around a sandwich or something... just grab the cheap picnic stuff if you're on a tight budget, it's fine. Meeting people happens anyway at hostels, you don't need a sit-down lunch to talk to anyone. Like, just pick what feels right for you in the moment and stop overthinking it lol.

Tascas all the way for a solo traveler, but here's the angle: the 5 euro lunch plate actually forces you to sit down and be present in a way a quick picnic doesn't. You're stuck at a table for an hour, the waiter's bringing food, and other solo diners or locals at the bar will start chatting you up because you're clearly a tourist eating alone. I did this at a tasca in Alfama and ended up sharing a bottle of vinho verde with a guy from Brazil who was on his own too. Picnics are fine for saving money, but they're too easy to scarf down fast while scrolling your phone - the social return on those few extra euros is huge.
