Vent: My cousin told me I was wasting money on hostels... now I'm not so sure

I used to swear by hostels for saving cash on solo trips... shared dorms in Bangkok for like $8 a night. But my cousin said I was missing out on better deals by not checking guesthouses or small local hotels first. So I tried a $15 guesthouse in Chiang Mai last month and honestly it was quieter and had free breakfast. Still torn because hostels have that social vibe though. Anyone else get called out for their travel style and actually change it up?

Totally get the "torn" feeling, that's a real thing. I've been in the same spot where someone points out a cheaper option and I feel like I've been doing it wrong the whole time. Hostel vibes are hard to beat though, especially when you meet cool people.

Hostels aren't for everyone, the lack of privacy kills the experience for me.
