Warning: my hostel mattress hack saved me $200 but almost got me bedbugs
In Lisbon last October I was stuck in a 12-bed dorm, so I bought a $3 inflatable camping pad and stacked it on the bunk, slept like a dream for 5 nights. Then the guy two beds down got covered in bites, and I spent the next 48 hours inspecting every seam like a maniac. Anyone else ever gambled on a weird sleep setup that was great until it wasn't?

Did you at least check that mattress for bedbugs before you put your pad down? I once stacked a yoga mat on a hostel bunk and woke up with something crawling on my neck. Turned out it was just a spider, but I still checked every crack in that room for two days. Your hack sounds fine until you realize you are basically sleeping on top of someone else's bugs. That $200 you saved is not worth a week of scratching and paranoia.
