Went to Puerto Rico and realized paying for checked bags is a trap
Tbh I always thought checking a bag was the only way to go for a beach trip. But last month I flew to San Juan with just a carry-on and a backpack. I saved $60 on bag fees and walked straight out of the airport while everyone else waited at baggage claim. Has anyone else tried packing lighter for a weeklong trip and actually made it work?

My wife packed for a week in Puerto Rico with one of those little carry-on rollers and I laughed at her at the gate. She fit three swimsuits, a pair of shorts, two sundresses, and some sandals. Meanwhile I had my big checked bag with four pairs of shoes I never wore and a rain jacket I didn't need. Who brings a rain jacket to the Caribbean, right?

Packed a rain jacket for Puerto Rico once too, @terry_lewis21, but used it as a towel when my bag got lost.

My buddy Mike did the same thing when we went to Cancun last year. He showed up with this overstuffed duffel bag and a guitar case and smugly told me I was nuts for only bringing a backpack. By day two he was complaining about how he didn't wear half the stuff he brought and had to drag that duffel everywhere. I just laughed and walked past him at the airport exit while he waited forty minutes for his bag to come out. Now he's a carry-on convert too, even brags about how much easier his trips are.
