Stumbled on an old receipt from 2008 that blew my mind on grocery prices

I was cleaning out a junk drawer yesterday and found a grocery receipt from March 2008. It was from the same store I go to now, a Kroger off 3rd street. A gallon of milk was $2.49 back then. Now it's $4.89 at that same store. Bread was 99 cents, now it's $2.79. I know inflation is real but seeing those numbers side by side made me realize how much our grocery budget has silently doubled over 16 years. Has anyone else dug up old receipts and felt totally thrown off by the difference?

Last Tuesday my hot water started going cold mid-shower, and by Wednesday morning the pilot light wouldn't even catch. I called three plumbers in Austin and the cheapest quote was $1,400 for a new unit plus install. Lucky for me I had been tucking away $50 a month into an emergency fund for the last two years, so I wasn't stuck financing it on a credit card at 22% interest. The real win was that the plumber offered a $200 discount if I paid cash, which I could do because I had the money set aside. I feel like if I hadn't been budgeting for stuff like this, I would have had to take out a loan or just gone without hot water for weeks. Has anyone else had a major appliance crap out on them and found their emergency fund saved the day?

I finally saw what aggressive couponing looks like in person

I went to WinCo last Saturday morning and this lady in front of me had a binder full of coupons. She was buying 30 boxes of granola bars and 20 things of toothpaste. Her total came to $240 something but after all her coupons she paid like $12. I was just standing there with my bag of apples and a rotisserie chicken feeling silly. Just realized buying bulk rice was my biggest money saver this year

I used to spend like $15 a week on those little bags of rice from the store. Then I saw a 50 pound bag at a restaurant supply place in Portland for $28. My sister told me her family saves $400 a month on groceries by never buying anything on the inner aisles and I'm torn between thinking that's genius or a complete waste of time.

She basically lives off produce, meat, and dairy from the perimeter of the store but I can't give up my boxed mac and cheese and frozen pizzas for the sake of a bigger savings goal, so is anyone else caught between convenience and cutting the budget that hard or do I just need to commit and see if the trade off is worth it?
