Crossed 10 grand in my emergency fund without even realizing it
I set up an automatic transfer of $50 every week into a separate savings account about two years ago. Totally forgot about it because I never check that account online. Last week I signed in to grab the account number for something and saw the balance was a little over $10,400. It felt weird to be surprised by money I basically just scheduled and ignored. Has anyone else had a random moment like that where a small habit ended up way bigger than you planned?

Wait til you need it for a real emergency and see how fast it vanishes.

Why does everyone act like having an emergency fund is some kind of magic trick that just disappears? I've had mine for years and it's still sitting there, untouched. You just have to be smart about what counts as a real emergency and not touch it for every little thing that comes up. Most people drain theirs because they treat a flat tire or a broken phone like it's a crisis, when really those are just normal life expenses you should plan for separately. If you actually save enough and set clear rules for yourself, it's not that hard to keep it around.
