My buddy Dave showed me his 'envelope system' at a cookout last month

He had these actual cash envelopes labeled 'groceries', 'gas', and 'fun money' on his kitchen counter (he budgets $400 for food and $150 for fun stuff each month). I tried it for June and it stopped me from overspending on takeout because I could see the money leaving my hand. Has anyone else used this method and found a category that was way harder to stick to than you thought?

Oh man, that reminds me of my "eating out" envelope. I had to hide it in a drawer because just seeing it made me want to order pizza. What's your toughest category to keep cash in?

My entertainment envelope always gets raided, so I keep it in a locked box now.

Ugh, the locked box is genius. I had to do something similar with my "fun money" because just having it in the house felt like permission to spend it. I ended up putting that cash in an envelope at the very back of my filing cabinet, behind a bunch of boring paperwork. The extra step of digging for it makes me really stop and think if I want to buy something. It's crazy how just moving the money out of sight can actually work.
