Tbh, I tried the cash envelope system for 6 months versus just using my debit card. The $400 difference in my 'fun money' category is wild.

That $400 difference is the whole point. Swiping a card doesn't feel real. Handing over actual cash makes you stop and think twice before you spend it. You physically see the money leaving your wallet. It forces you to feel the limit in a way a digital number just can't.

My online shopping cart is basically a crime scene when I use my card. I put a hundred dollar bill in my wallet for fun money last week and it's still there, staring at me like a sad, lonely friend. Who knew a piece of paper could give you such a guilt trip?
