The $3 spreadsheet trick that killed my grocery impulse buys

I kept blowing $80+ per store run because I'd grab random stuff at the checkout, so last month I started listing every item from my receipt into a shared Google Sheet with my wife and color-coded it red if it wasn't on the list. Turns out just seeing the red cells pile up made us both stop adding snacks and drinks without planning first. Has anyone else tried visual shame as a budgeting tool, or is there a better way to keep that impulse line item at zero?

Really feel this one. My wife and I started doing the same thing with a shared note on our phones, and seeing that little red list grow makes me feel like a straight up clown every time. It sucks at first but honestly it works.
