The $600 fridge compressor died 9 days after the warranty ended

Bought a basic Whirlpool back in 2019, paid $600 at Home Depot. It went out last Tuesday, 9 days past the 5 year warranty. Repair guy quoted me $450 for the part plus labor, said it wasn't worth it. I ended up buying a scratch and dent model from a local place in Tulsa for $380 and it works fine. The old one is sitting in my garage as a reminder that extended warranties might actually be worth it on big appliances. Has anyone else had a major appliance fail right after the warranty expired, and did you find a cheaper fix than I did?

Buddy of mine had a Samsung washer die 3 weeks after the 1-year warranty. He found the exact motor on eBay for like $80 and fixed it himself with a YouTube video. Took him a whole weekend but he saved like $300.
