Tried the 50/30/20 rule for 6 months, thought it was too simple to work
I always rolled my eyes at budgeting rules because my finances are too messy for one-size-fits-all stuff. But my rent in Austin went up $200 last year and I was panic-checking my account every week. So I gave the 50/30/20 method a real shot starting in March. Put 50% on needs like rent and groceries, 30% on wants like eating out, and 20% straight to savings. After 6 months I had $1,400 more saved than normal without feeling like I was starving. Anyone else find that the dumb simple systems actually beat the complicated spreadsheets?

Did you ever read that one study about how people who use simpler systems actually stick with them longer? I saw a breakdown somewhere that said complicated budgets fail 80% of the time because people just give up. Your $1,400 is real money, not a "big whoop". I had a buddy who tracked every single coffee purchase for a year and it drove him crazy, he just stopped checking after month three. Meanwhile I just ballpark my categories in a notebook and I've got an emergency fund now. Maybe the secret is just not overthinking it.
