Update: Took me 7 months to cancel a $9.99 gym membership and the last call was 45 minutes
I know it sounds silly, but this one membership ate up so much of my time it turned into a weird kind of win when it finally ended. I signed up at a gym in Fairfax back in January because they had a deal with no sign up fee, then moved in March and figured canceling would take one phone call. It did not. The first call they told me I had to mail a letter, so I sent one certified for $8. Then they said the letter never arrived and kept billing me. I called back in June and they offered to "pause" it for $5 a month instead, which I turned down. Two more calls, one email chain with a manager, and a screenshot of my bank statement later, it finally stopped in August. Counting the certified mail and the two months of wrong charges I fought back, I probably spent $30 and close to four hours on hold to save $9.99 a month. Has anyone else had a subscription that turned into a part time job to get rid of? Curious what actually worked for you, because mailing a letter felt like a trick more than a policy.
