Hot take: monthly spreads are a total waste of time and ink

I read a post where someone said they spent 4 hours setting up a fancy monthly layout with washi tape and markers, and my first thought was that you could have used all that time to just write down your appointments on a daily log instead.

Well, four hours? Good heavens, that's longer than I spend cleaning the kitchen on a Saturday. I cannot wrap my head around spending that much time on a pretty layout when you could have all your appointments written down in fifteen minutes flat. It strikes me as putting the cart before the horse, honestly. The point of a planner is to plan, not to create a museum piece that sits on your desk. I'd rather have a messy, functional calendar than a work of art that I'm too scared to actually write in.

Oh yeah, I'm totally with you on this... I tried the whole fancy planner thing once and spent two hours doodling borders and picking out washi tape before I even wrote down a single appointment. By the time I was done, I'd lost the motivation to actually plan anything and just went back to my old spiral notebook with coffee stains all over it. It's like the pretty stuff gets in the way of what you're actually trying to do, you know?

I mean, is it really that big of a deal either way?
