My color key broke down at a coworking space in Austin, now I only use 3 colors max
Watching my 12-color key turn into a tangled mess during a 2-hour meeting made me switch to just red for tasks, blue for events, and green for notes, and I haven't missed the fancy setup since, anyone else ditch their elaborate keys for something simpler?

The tangled mess thing is exactly what pushed me over the edge too. I had this whole color coded system in college and it was great until the first time my key fell apart mid lecture. Now I'm down to the same three you've got, red for deadlines, blue for meetings, green for random thoughts, and honestly it's way less stressful. I keep a little cheat sheet in my notebook just in case I forget what each color means, which sounds dumb but it works. The trick is to buy those cheap retractable ones instead of the fancy sets, they never seem to explode the same way.
