My travel journal system cracked after a 3 day train trip in Chicago

I had this whole color coded layout for dailies, but halfway through Union Station I realized I was spending 20 minutes decorating instead of actually recording the trip. Now I pack a pocket notebook with just date, weather, and one line per stop. Has anyone else ditched fancy spreads for bare bones on the road?
