Sat in a diner in Tulsa for 3 hours and watched a waitress run her whole shift out of one small notebook
I was in Tulsa last week for my cousin's wedding and killed a morning at this old diner near the hotel. The waitress working the counter had this tiny notebook, maybe 3 by 5 inches, and she ran the entire floor out of it. She wrote orders in a grid she made herself, one column per table, and drew a little box next to each item she added. When food came up she crossed the box off instead of scribbling the line out, so she could still read what the table asked for. She also had a running list at the back for things she needed to restock, and every time she walked past the coffee station she checked the list before it ran out. I asked her about it near the end of her shift and she said she has used the same layout for 11 years. It made me rethink my own daily spread, because mine has way too many sections and hers was just one page doing all the work. How many of you keep a separate page for work stuff versus a single running layout like she does?
I tried a separate work page for a while and it just got messy, so now I keep one page with a line down the middle for work and home stuff. Seeing her box trick makes me want to try crossing things off instead of scratching them out, that part is smart.
