A recruiter in Chicago shredded my resume during a coffee chat and it fixed 4 months of silence
I met her at a coffee shop on Wacker back in March and asked her to be honest about why I kept getting ghosted. She flipped my resume over and said the top third was all job duties, nothing about results, and that hiring managers spend maybe 8 seconds before they move on. So I rewrote it with numbers in the first three lines of each job, like how I cut invoice errors from 12 a week to 2 by building a simple spreadsheet check. Got 3 callbacks in 2 weeks after 4 months of nothing. If you have ever had someone give you feedback that stung but actually helped, what did they say?
Wait, the recruiter said the top third was all job duties and nothing about results, but did she actually show you what a good one looks like, or did she just tell you what was wrong? I ask because I had a similar thing happen where someone trashed my resume but then couldn't explain what better looked like, and I spent weeks guessing. The part about 8 seconds is real though, my old boss literally told me he sorts resumes into yes and no piles before he even reads the second page. Also curious if you changed anything else besides adding numbers, like your summary line or job titles, because I wonder how much of the 3 callbacks was the numbers vs just having a cleaner layout.
