Dropped $250 on a 'career coaching' package and all I got was generic advice I coulda found on Google

I was job hunting for 3 months and felt stuck so I paid this coach $250 for a 2 hour session. She just told me to tailor my resume and network more, stuff I already knew. Then she tried to upsell me on a $700 package for 'personal branding.' I asked for a refund and she said no because I 'got the value.' Has anyone else had luck with actual useful career advice from a paid service?

$250 for two hours of someone telling you to tailor your resume is steep but her advice wasn't wrong. Most people complaining about coaches just want a magic bullet that doesn't exist. The real value in paying someone is having them hold you accountable so you actually do the boring stuff you know you should be doing.

Remembered a buddy who paid a fitness coach $300 a month to tell him to stop eating donuts, which he already knew. He complained about the price until he actually stopped eating the donuts and realized the money was just the kick in the pants he needed. Sometimes you're paying for the shame of not doing the obvious stuff on your own.
