Got a $4,200 raise on Tuesday and quit by Friday, was I dumb or smart?
Two weeks ago my boss at the logistics office in Dayton pulled me in and gave me a $4,200 raise, which worked out to about $80 a week after taxes. Then on Friday I got an offer from a smaller company for $6,000 less but fully remote, so I took it and walked out. My mom says I gave up free money, my girlfriend says the commute alone was costing me $90 a month in gas. Anyone been in this spot and which way did you go?
Good for you for walking out, that $80 a week would've been eaten up fast by gas and wear on your car anyway. I had almost the same thing happen at my old call center job where they bumped me up $3,500 and acted like they handed me a gold bar, but the drive was 45 minutes each way and I was burning $200 a month just on gas plus oil changes. Took a pay cut of $5k to work from home and my bank account actually looked better after like two months once I stopped buying lunch and coffee every day. People forget your time and your car cost real money, not just your check. Remote work also saved me on dry cleaning and I got to drop the second car insurance, so tell your mom the math works out in your favor lol.
