I saw a hiring sign at a Waffle House in Macon that made me rethink my whole job hunt
I stopped at a Waffle House in Macon, Georgia off I-75 three weeks ago on a road trip and the manager had taped a handwritten sign to the door that said "hiring, ask for Deb, no experience needed, we train." I sat there eating hash browns and watched her interview two people right at the counter while flipping eggs. One guy came in with no resume, no phone, just walked up and asked for Deb, and she hired him on the spot for the overnight shift at $15 an hour. Meanwhile I have sent out 47 applications online since March and gotten two automated rejection emails back. The whole thing bugged me because I keep hearing that you need a polished resume and a LinkedIn profile and a cover letter tailored to each job, and this guy got a job in four minutes by showing up in person. Deb told him to come back at 9pm with closed toe shoes. I have a degree and I am getting out-hustled by a guy in flip flops at a waffle counter. Has anyone else just walked into a place and asked for the manager, and did it go anywhere?
