I used to think networking was just handing out business cards at events.

After a year of getting zero calls back, I started just asking people about their work over coffee. Last month, a guy I met at a diner in Boise told me about an opening at his company. I got the job because we actually talked about real stuff, not just my resume. Anyone else find that real connections beat formal networking?

Funny how the best job leads come from just being a decent person, not a walking resume.

Ever notice how people remember how you made them feel more than your skills? I got my last role because a former coworker liked working with me and passed my name along. It really is about who you are, not just what you know.

I mean, that's a nice thought and all, but I've seen plenty of skilled jerks get hired because their portfolio was too good to ignore. Skills are what get the work done right, and if someone's personality is a problem, you can usually work around it. Maybe it's just me, but I'd rather have a grumpy expert fixing my code than a friendly person who can't do the job.
