I was sure networking was just awkward small talk, but a 15-minute chat at a Denver conference last month actually led to a referral for a project.

Denver's a great scene for that. I've found those quick chats work best when you skip the elevator pitch and ask one real question about their current work problem. What specific thing did you discuss that made your chat stand out from the usual small talk?
