My manager said my resume looked like a grocery list

He pulled me aside after my shift and said, 'Alice, this just lists your tasks, it doesn't show what you actually did.' I was just putting down stuff like 'served drinks' and 'cleaned bar.' So I went home and rewrote every single line to focus on results, like 'increased weekly specialty cocktail sales by 15% by suggesting them to regulars.' It was a pain but it makes way more sense now. Anyone else have to totally redo their resume from scratch like that?

Damn, that's a rough way to find out your resume reads like a shopping list. But honestly, most of us start that way because nobody tells you the rules. I had to do a full rewrite after a friend who's a recruiter flat out said my resume was just a list of chores. So I sat there and forced myself to add numbers to every line, like "processed 200 orders per shift" or "cut wait times by 5 minutes by reorganizing the prep station." It took me three days and I wanted to throw my laptop out the window. But it worked because the next interview I got, the manager literally said, "I can see exactly what you did for your last place." So yeah, that pain is worth it, even if it feels like homework.

Ever try using the STAR method for those bullet points? It forces you to frame every task as a specific result.
