My old boss in Austin pulled me aside after a meeting and said 'stop asking for permission to do your job'.
He said it in the hallway, and it completely changed how I act at work now. Has a single piece of advice from a manager ever stuck with you like that?

Sounds like good advice for some people, but honestly it depends on the boss. I've had managers who said stuff like that, then got mad when you made a call without checking in. It feels like a trap sometimes. They want you to own your role but also want total control. That advice only works if the manager actually means it and backs it up. Without real trust from the top, it's just empty words.

Robertgreen is totally right about the trust part. That advice only works if your boss actually steps back and lets you run with things. I've seen managers say one thing but then second-guess every little choice you make. It creates this weird spot where you're supposed to act but also scared to step on their toes. The real test is if they support you when something goes sideways instead of blaming you for not checking in.
