My old manager told me to never negotiate my first salary offer, but I did and got an extra $5k a year.
He said it would make me look greedy, but after reading a book on salary tactics, I asked anyway and they agreed without a fight, so should you always push back on that first number?

Nice for you, but that's not a sure thing for every job. Sometimes it really can backfire, @kim.xena. Depends on the company and how they do things.
