Overheard my boss say my job could be done by a chatbot and now I'm spiraling
I was grabbing a coffee from the break room last Tuesday and heard my manager talking to the VP about how our customer support team might get replaced by AI. He specifically said something like 'we could save $45k a year just on Sarah's salary alone'. I've been at this company for 3 years in Nashville and I thought my performance reviews were solid. Has anyone else been in a situation where you overheard something that made you question your whole career path? How do you even bounce back from knowing your job might be automated?

Honestly, I see it differently than "the_rowan"... joking about replacing someone's livelihood isn't something managers do lightly, especially with a VP. Your boss ran the numbers, he knows exactly what he's saying, and that's a cold fact you can't ignore. But here's the thing - even if they could automate parts of your job truly, a chatbot can't build real relationships with customers or understand the messy, human side of their problems. You've been there three years, so you know the job better than anyone, and that kind of experience is worth a lot more than $45k in savings when the cheap bot messes up. I'd start updating your resume quietly and maybe look into roles that need that personal touch you've got... just don't let it eat you alive.

@the_rowan I started looking for a new job after my boss did the same thing and it worked out way better.
