PSA: found out the average job posting gets 250 resumes, and I thought my 30 applications was a lot
Was reading a hiring report from Glassdoor that said some postings pull in around 250 resumes, and here I was proud of sending out 30 in two weeks back in January. My cousin in Columbus works in HR and she said they toss most of them in under a minute, which honestly made me feel worse about my cover letter. So is it even worth customizing each one, or should I just apply to a hundred and hope something sticks?
The average job posting gets 250 resumes" is the same thing as those dating app stats where the top 10% get all the matches. It's not that you're doing anything wrong, it's just a numbers game where most people are invisible no matter how good they are. Your cousin tossing them in a minute tells you the custom cover letter is mostly for you, not for them, so do a quick one and spend the rest of your time hitting more places.
