Rant: I thought networking events were a waste of time until one in Portland last month.
A casual chat there led to a referral for a project that paid $2k. Has anyone else had a random connection actually work out?

Totally get what you mean about thinking they're a waste of time! I used to feel the same way. I stopped trying to sell myself and just focused on having a normal chat about common interests. That shift made all the difference. A casual talk about hiking gear last year actually led to a steady freelance client.

Normal chat about common interests" is key, but I've found being upfront about my work early on filters out the wrong people faster.
