Skip the $200 resume writer, a guy in Des Moines fixed mine for free in 30 minutes
I paid a resume service $200 back in March and sent out 47 applications with zero calls. A buddy who hires for a factory in Des Moines looked at it and said the format was so fancy the software couldn't even read my job dates. We rewrote the thing in plain text in about 30 minutes and I had 3 phone screens that same week. The expensive service never once asked what jobs I was actually applying for, which I now think is the real red flag.
The part that got me was when you said the service never asked what jobs you were actually applying for. That right there tells you everything about how these places work. They just plug your info into a pretty template and cash the check, no clue what field you're even in. So my question is this: when you and your buddy stripped it down to plain text, did you also switch up the actual words in your job descriptions, or was it mostly just the formatting that was killing you? I keep hearing that the robots scan for exact keywords from the job posting, and half the battle is matching that wording. Did you go back and tailor it for each application after the rewrite, or did one plain version work fine across the board? Asking because I'm about to redo mine and I don't want to pay somebody again just to mess it up twice.
